A family owned business,
1962. Bram and Ena Boekestyn.
Boekestyn Greenhouses Inc. was founded by Ysbrand (Bram) Boekestyn back in 1962. He immigrated to Canada from De Lier, Netherlands, looking to escape the aftermath of the harsh war and discover a new future. Shortly after arriving in Canada, he met his beautiful wife Ena, and together they laid roots in Lincoln, Ontario. They began a tomato farm on Fairlane Road while raising their four children: Nettie, Brian, John, and Ed.
They continued to grow tomatoes until 1998 when the Fairlane Rd. farm was sold, in order to focus on growing potted plants at a new location. Displayed here is the tomato scale and pot planter used by Bram.
The family-owned and -operated business has a long history, dating back to 1962, when Dutch immigrants Bram and Ena Boekestyn launched their first commercial greenhouse for growing ornamental plants and flowers. Since then, it’s been 3 generations of growers, 3 production greenhouses, and 70 Acres of land propelling their growth along the way.
1985. Flora Pack
The Boekestyn family united as a collaboration of growers to produce seasonal crops and operated by selling through their sales & marketing arm of the business, Flora Pack. With the production of weekly plants and flowers, and peaks at every holiday, Flora Pack has been able to distinguish themselves from the others through higher quality products that they are able to offer.
In 1985, land was purchased on Thirteenth Street, Lincoln, to accommodate for the growing business. It wasn’t long until Bram noticed that business was booming, and more greenhouse space was needed. With his sons entering the business, ownership began to shift and the focus became potted plants. This led to the end of the tomato business and the beginning of the floral industry. After numerous expansions to the greenhouse, as well as adding a warehouse, and a sales business called Flora Pack, Thirteenth Street was completed in 2000.
& Boekestyn Greenhouses Plant 2:With sales continuing to rise, Flora Pack, was outgrowing their offices and warehouse. This led to the purchase of a second farm ‘Plant 2’ at 1539 Fourth Ave. The Flora Pack team, including the warehouse crew, all moved to this new location to accommodate the growing sales and shipping needs.
2022. High Tech Greenhouses For High Quality Floral.
In 2020, the economy shifted due to the covid pandemic. Some greenhouses were exiting the industry, which provoked the idea to increase the business one more time. Together, the second and third generations of Boekestyn Greenhouses began to build in 2021 on 2085 Fourth Ave. With tight deadlines for crop production, the greenhouse was finished in 2022.
However, it quickly became noticeable that there was not enough warehouse space, so an additional piece was completed in 2023. Known as our ‘Plant 3 location’. It has a total of 209,000 square feet of production area and has now become the main location where most of the business is currently being conducted.
Plant 3 was designed for efficiency, sustainability, and light transmission, Boekestyn Greenhouses provide the very best rooting environments possible for their products. It is now the primary location for Boekestyn Greenhouses and is designated for future expansion projects.
Plant 3: Central Operations HubThis project, executed by Havecon Horticultural Projects, aimed to enhance production capacity to meet growing demand, particularly from U.S.-based grocery chains and wholesale partners. Construction began in October 2021, with completion scheduled for early February 2022, and the first crops planted by March 2022 .
Our Core Values
At Boekestyn Greenhouses, all our values hold equal importance in fostering a strong sense of belonging and a positive work culture within our community. Embracing these values in our daily routines is a fundamental part of who we are.
The purpose of these values are to encourage meaningful communication, identify effective practices to be maintained and identify areas for improvement to support future growth.
Purposefully Productive:Quality may be king, but timing is queen. Because even the most stunning plants won’t make an impact if they don’t reach our customers on time. So we’re purposefully productive. Not just busy, but focused and intentional with our time and energy so that together we can be a well-oiled machine. This means owning your role, knowing exactly what needs to be done and jumping in to make it happen. It means staying organized so you’re always prepared and paying attention to the details that make a difference. It means taking initiative when you see a gap or a chance to make things more efficient. On this team, everyone’s actions matter. Purposeful productivity ensures we keep things moving, so our beautiful products reach the shelves exactly when they need to.
Embracing Excellence:Our passion for flowers and plants pushes us to hold a high standard of excellence —anything less compromises the beauty our customers expect. For them, quality is king. They deserve products they can stock with pride, confident they’re offering something special. While perfection isn’t always possible, embracing excellence means keeping the bar high and making it right if we fall short. And when we have to balance quality and efficiency, it means making the best decision with the information at hand, staying transparent with our customers, and always looking for ways to improve next time. It also means pushing ourselves to grow, asking good questions and learning from those who have more experience. We’re open to feedback, we learn from failure and we stay accountable to one another. This dedication to excellence shines through in everything we do — from how we present ourselves to the way we care for our customers. By embracing excellence, we deliver an exceptional experience, every time.
Together in Community: On this team, every role matters — and so does our unity. With so many moving parts involved in getting beautiful products to our customers, we have to continually remind ourselves that we’re stronger together. One team. One mission. Working together in community means stepping up for each other — whether it’s jumping in when things get hectic or embracing new roles with a positive attitude. It’s about offering support across teams and departments and proactively asking for clarity when things are unclear. But our sense of community doesn’t stop at our doors. We see the entire floral industry as part of our shared journey, and we believe in treating everyone with the same respect and humility that we show each other. By fostering connection and collaboration both within and beyond our team, we create a space where everyone feels valued, heard and ready to give their best. And that’s how we deliver beauty — together.
Appreciating Beauty: At Boekestyn Greenhouses, we stop to smell the chrysanthemums. After all, we can’t enrich people’s lives with beautiful products if we don’t see the beauty ourselves. With so much beauty around us — from the plants we work with to the people we collaborate with — it’s easy to take it for granted. That’s why we make a point to pause, notice and fuel our passion for plants and people. Whether it’s taking a moment to admire a vibrant bloom or recognizing the craftsmanship behind each arrangement, we stay mindful of the care in our work. It also means celebrating wins, big and small, and focusing on the positive when cynicism creeps in. And it means empathizing with every partner, customer and coworker, treating them with the respect they deserve. By slowing down to notice, we’re energized to build lasting relationships and bring the beauty we see to the world.
Living with Integrity:Integrity is who we are when no one’s watching. At Boekestyn Greenhouses, it means doing the right thing, even when it’s inconvenient. It starts with our commitment to delivering quality— what we show is what we ship. If we fall short, we’re honest about it and we make it right. But integrity isn’t just about our products. It’s about how we treat people — our customers, partners and each other. We show respect, speak truthfully and stay calm and patient, even under pressure. This can be hardest with those closest to us, especially when things get busy or the stress of the holiday season hits. But integrity needs to reach all corners of our team—on the easy days and the tough ones. All people are worthy of respect and when we honour that belief, our relationships are as beautiful as our products.
